Community Detention Officer Supervisor - Maryland Department of Juvenile Services

About the Role

The Maryland Department of Juvenile Services (DJS) is committed to positively transforming the lives of youth, enhancing community safety, and promoting equitable justice systems. We are currently seeking a dedicated Community Detention Officer Supervisor to oversee and support the Community Detention Program, a statewide alternative to secure confinement that enables court-ordered home detention supervised with enhanced monitoring.

Key Responsibilities

• Allocate caseloads and define regional boundaries to balance workloads and ensure effective supervision of youth under home detention.
• Collaborate with Community Detention Officers to ensure timely and appropriate interventions in response to youth noncompliance.
• Manage detention admissions related to public safety concerns and protocol violations, processing for Director approval.
• Coordinate equipment accountability in partnership with the Inventory Specialist.
• Review and authorize court reports to guarantee their accuracy and thoroughness before submission.
• Conduct regular meetings with supervised staff to discuss program operations, case management, documentation practices, compliance, and logistics such as vehicle inspections.
• Participate in bi-weekly supervisory meetings to maintain program cohesion and communication.
• Prepare reports for leadership detailing program changes and youth needs.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience:

• High school diploma or equivalent certified by the Maryland State Board of Education as recognized by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission.
• At least three years of experience supervising juveniles in court-ordered community or home detention programs.

Experience Substitutions:

• Two years of juvenile supervision experience in a juvenile facility or community program for at-risk youth can substitute for one year of the required experience.
• An Associate of Arts degree in Criminal Justice, social or behavioral sciences, or at least 60 college credit hours (including 15 in criminal justice or social/behavioral sciences) may substitute for one year of experience (transcripts required).
• Equivalent military service as a non-commissioned officer in applicable correctional classifications can count year-for-year for required experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Social Work, Psychology, or related disciplines.
• Proven experience supervising staff who monitor youth under court-ordered supervision and managing their performance.
• Experience coordinating responses to youth violations including assessment and enforcement actions like detention referrals.
• Skill in reviewing and approving court-related reports or case files for accuracy and compliance.

Licenses and Certifications

• Must obtain full certification by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission prior to appointment and maintain certification throughout employment.
• If performing duties involving vehicle operation, a valid Maryland motor vehicle operator’s license is necessary.

Special Requirements

• Must meet Maryland Correctional Training Commission's minimum standards including U.S. citizenship or resident alien status, minimum age of 21, background check with fingerprinting, drug screening, oral interview, physical and psychological assessments.
• Subject to regular substance abuse testing as per Maryland regulations.

Selection and Examination Process

Applicants must provide complete and accurate information proving qualification by the closing date. Qualified applicants will be placed on an eligible list valid for one year and potentially considered for similar future roles.
