Job description

About the organisation

Barts Health NHS Trust is among the UK’s largest and most influential healthcare organisations, supporting a population of more than two million people across north east London. Working across five hospitals, the Trust has a major role in improving patient outcomes, reducing health inequalities and helping to shape modern integrated care.

Whipps Cross Hospital is a major acute hospital with a long-standing legacy and a significant future ahead. This appointment offers a pivotal leadership opportunity within one of east London’s most important healthcare settings.

The opportunity

The Chief Executive for Whipps Cross Hospital will sit on the Group Executive and Trust Board, helping steer the broader strategy of Barts Health while leading the hospital through an important period of change and development. The postholder will be accountable for safe, high-quality and efficient service delivery, while also creating a strong, inclusive workplace culture that enables teams to perform at their best for patients.

This is a role with both immediate operational responsibility and a long-term transformation agenda. A central part of the post will be the Whipps Cross redevelopment programme, a major investment expected to modernise facilities, patient pathways and the overall care experience as the hospital continues to improve quality and performance.

As the Trust’s place-based leader in Waltham Forest, the successful candidate will work closely with local authorities, the integrated care system and community partners to improve outcomes and address inequality. The role also requires an outward-facing leader who can build trust, influence stakeholders and unite people behind meaningful change.

What the Trust is looking for

The Trust is seeking a values-driven executive with the credibility to operate at board level in a complex organisation and the drive to lead change on a large scale. The right candidate will have a strong record of improving performance in demanding healthcare environments, along with the strategic judgement and operational discipline needed for a role of this size and importance.

Equally important is the ability to develop inclusive cultures, lead multidisciplinary teams and bring clarity and confidence to a period of transformation. This is a high-impact opportunity to shape the direction of a major London hospital and contribute to one of the NHS’s most ambitious organisations.

Application requirements

Along with a CV and supporting statement, applicants must submit a 3-minute video response explaining their motivation for applying for the role. Full guidance for recording the video is provided through the application process.

The deadline for both the application and video submission is 9:00am on Friday 7th August.

If support is needed, candidates may contact Mickala Da-Silva, Senior Project Coordinator, who can provide assistance.

Values and culture

Barts Health says its vision is to be a high-performing group of NHS hospitals recognised for excellence and innovation, delivering safe and compassionate care to patients in east London and beyond. The Trust places emphasis on patient safety, consistently harm-free care, and ensuring patients receive care in the right place at the right time.

The organisation also aims to be an excellent place to work. Its WeCare values and behaviours are expected to guide how colleagues work together, and the Trust states that it is committed to inclusion, belonging and a working environment that values and supports difference.
