Job description
Position Overview
Join the Welfare Rights Team at Lancashire County Council as a Welfare Rights Officer on a full-time fixed-term contract until 31 March 2029. This role supports vulnerable individuals and families in East Lancashire, including opportunities for remote and home working. You will advocate for and ensure clients receive the benefits and support they are entitled to, promoting independent and secure living.
Role Responsibilities
- Advocate and support vulnerable people to secure their benefit entitlements.
- Challenge welfare decisions and navigate complex welfare legislation effectively.
- Engage with local groups, organizations, and training initiatives to raise awareness and foster social change.
- Work empathetically with clients, building trust and addressing mental health impacts of poverty.
- Utilize personal vehicles for travel across East Lancashire to provide in-person support.
Candidate Profile
- Demonstrates a strong commitment to social justice and reducing poverty's impact.
- Possesses in-depth knowledge of welfare legislation and practical advocacy skills.
- Displays resilience, empathy, and excellent interpersonal communication.
- Capable of managing challenges tactfully and pragmatically within current systems.
- Understands mental health considerations related to poverty and directs clients to frontline services.
Additional Information
This role requires a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975, as amended. A valid driving license and insured vehicle are essential, though exceptions may be made for disabilities that prevent driving. Flexibility for hybrid working and job sharing arrangements is offered. The office location is negotiable within East Lancashire.
