Role Summary
The Waste Management Technician is accountable for the safe, efficient, and regulation-compliant handling, treatment, and disposal of liquid and hazardous waste at one or more global destination sites operated by Carnival Corporation. The position is focused on protecting people, property, and the environment by following company policies, environmental standards, and all applicable rules.
This role involves monitoring waste streams, separating materials correctly, ensuring containers and storage areas are properly labeled and safe, carrying out inspections, performing routine upkeep on waste-handling equipment, and keeping accurate records of all waste-related activity. The technician also identifies hazards, raises safety concerns, and supports training and emergency-response efforts to help maintain a secure workplace.
Success in this job requires solid knowledge of hazardous materials, disposal methods, and environmental compliance, along with strong attention to detail, organization, and a practical commitment to sustainability and safe working practices.
Key Duties
- Support waste collection and on-site processing activities.
- Handle hazardous materials and hazardous waste, including testing, classification, bulking, lab packing, and preparation of shipping paperwork.
- Assist with planning, setup, and preparation for waste-related activities and events when needed.
- Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and help coordinate repairs for a range of electrical, mechanical, and heavy equipment.
- Use personal protective equipment and safety gear correctly at all times on site.
- Follow all safety and compliance rules related to waste disposal.
- Use the correct reporting process when issues arise.
- Prepare written reports for inspections, investigations, incidents, and day-to-day work activities.
- Provide first aid assistance when required.
- Train others and suggest updates or improvements to procedures.
- Carry out any additional duties assigned by a supervisor or delegate.
Skills and Competencies
The role calls for advanced practical coordination skills, a customer-focused approach, clear communication, the ability to juggle multiple priorities, and strong critical thinking. Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools is also important.
Education and Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED is required; equivalent experience may be accepted.
- Additional education in hospitality or a related field is considered an advantage.
- Technical or waste-management certification is mandatory.
- At least 2 years of experience in a technical maintenance environment within a hotel or similar industry is required.
- Prior relevant work experience is preferred.
Language Requirements
- Conversational English fluency is required.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills are needed.
Physical Requirements
- Must be physically fit for the role.
- Ability to work outdoors as needed.
- May be required to stand for extended periods.
Other Requirements
- Ability to multitask effectively and think critically.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making ability.
- Excellent planning and coordination skills, especially when managing several priorities under tight deadlines.
- May be asked to work a shift-based schedule at any of the destination sites.
