Position Overview
The Vice President of Project Management is a senior executive role focused on leading the organization’s project portfolio, enterprise programs, and high-priority strategic initiatives. This position is accountable for delivering projects on schedule, within approved budgets, and to strong quality standards, while keeping execution aligned with business strategy. The role typically heads the Enterprise Project Management Office (PMO), coordinates work across departments, and drives delivery of major transformation efforts.
Primary focus areas: project management strategy, PMO setup and governance, portfolio oversight, resource planning, budget control, risk management, performance management, and execution of corporate transformation projects.
Mission: to turn strategic plans into measurable outcomes by ensuring the successful delivery of the company’s most important projects.
Key Responsibilities
Build and institutionalize the enterprise project management framework, including standards, governance, workflows, and best practices.
Oversee the full project portfolio by setting priorities, balancing resources, and improving return on investment.
Lead large, multi-project programs and coordinate cross-functional teams while managing dependencies and strategic alignment.
Direct PMO activities such as project oversight, governance practices, methodology maintenance, and performance tracking.
Create project budgets, monitor spending, control costs, manage capital expenditure, and evaluate financial outcomes.
Identify delivery risks, prepare mitigation plans, strengthen quality controls, and improve overall project success rates.
Guide major corporate change efforts, including digital transformation, ERP rollout, M&A integration, and organizational restructuring.
Introduce AI-enabled project monitoring and reporting tools to improve forecasting, automation, and resource efficiency.
Lead and develop senior project teams such as PMO Directors, Project Directors, Project Managers, Project Control Managers, and Project Financial Managers.
Provide executive-level reporting, project dashboards, investment analysis, and decision support to senior leadership.
Qualifications
This role is typically suited to professionals with 15–20+ years of experience in large-scale project delivery, PMO leadership, cross-department coordination, and team management.
Common educational backgrounds include Project Management, Engineering Management, Business Management, Finance, or Information Systems Management.
Preferred prior roles include Project Director, Head of PMO, Program Director, or Head of Strategic Operations.
Core Competencies
The position calls for strong project planning, execution, control, and delivery skills, along with solid financial analysis, strategic execution, resource allocation, leadership, risk management, communication, and coordination capabilities.
Reporting Structure
This position typically reports to the Chief Operating Officer, SVP of Project Management, or EVP of Project Management.
Direct reporting teams may include the PMO Director, Project Director, Project Managers, and the Project Control team.
Performance Measures
Success in this role is commonly assessed through on-time delivery rates, budget adherence, project success rates, ROI, number of risk incidents, resource utilization, customer satisfaction, and completion of strategic projects.
