Role Overview

The Vice President of Finance and Operations oversees the Foundation's financial strategy and essential operational functions, ensuring responsible financial management, operational efficiency, compliance with regulations, and robust infrastructure that supports transparent decision-making and the organization's sustainable growth.

As an integral senior leadership member, this person partners strategically with the CEO and Board of Directors during pivotal growth phases. Responsibilities include managing financial planning and analysis, budgeting, reporting, audits, compliance, and operational systems development. The role focuses on implementing scalable processes and controls to advance the Foundation's mission and long-term goals, translating financial and operational data into valuable insights for strategic planning and performance enhancement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct the Foundation's financial strategy by crafting long-term plans, projections, scenario analyses, and cash flow models to ensure organizational sustainability and growth.
  • Act as a strategic advisor to both CEO and Board by providing insightful financial analysis, modeling, and recommendations to guide decisions.
  • Develop and track financial and operational performance metrics to bolster accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Lead the creation and management of annual budgets and multi-year financial plans.
  • Establish advanced budgeting and forecasting procedures, replacing outdated methods with rigorous forward-looking approaches.
  • Monitor and analyze financial results versus forecasts to identify risks and opportunities promptly.
  • Develop financial reporting systems and dashboards to enhance transparency, decision-making, and accountability.
  • Prepare and deliver financial presentations for Board and Finance/Audit Committee meetings, serving as the financial expert.
  • Strengthen internal financial controls by evaluating current accounting practices and instituting robust policies and documentation to safeguard assets.
  • Oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and timely closing processes.
  • Ensure adherence to GAAP, IRS standards, nonprofit accounting, and all legal requirements.
  • Manage relationship with external auditors, oversee audits, tax filings, and Form 990 preparations.
  • Improve accounting infrastructure and closing procedures to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and scalability.
  • Manage payroll and benefits administration via the PEO partnership, ensuring compliance, precision, and a positive employee experience.
  • Oversee financial aspects of employee benefits programs in collaboration with external providers.
  • Manage finances of restricted and unrestricted funds, respecting donor and grant stipulations.
  • Collaborate with Development and Partnerships teams on budgeting, reconciliation, and financial reporting related to grants.
  • Enhance tracking and reporting systems for restricted funding to support complex multi-year funding growth.
  • Work cross-functionally to ensure financial perspectives are integrated into strategic and operational decision-making.
  • Promote a culture of financial accountability, operational excellence, and shared responsibility throughout the organization.
  • Adopt a hands-on leadership style, balancing strategic initiatives with direct involvement when necessary.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, business, or a related discipline is required; advanced degrees such as CPA or MBA are preferred.
  • Over 10 years of progressive leadership experience in finance, including senior-level roles.
  • Nonprofit finance experience is highly desirable, especially familiarity with restricted funds and grant accounting.
  • Proven track record in developing or enhancing financial and operational frameworks within growing organizations.
  • Experience overseeing payroll systems, employee benefits, and managing Professional Employer Organization (PEO) relations is advantageous.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate financial information effectively to Boards and executive leadership.
