Job description
About the Role
Southern Cross North Harbour Hospital is a private surgical inpatient hospital on Auckland’s North Shore, featuring 8 operating rooms, a 14-bed post anaesthetic care unit, a modern day-stay unit, and a 70-bed ward that includes a 4-bed intermediate care facility. The wider campus also houses an endoscopy suite, cardiology services, cancer care, pharmacy, sports medicine, radiology, and other services.
We are seeking a Sterile Services Technician to play a vital behind-the-scenes role in supporting safe and successful surgical care. In this hands-on position, you will manage the end-to-end reprocessing cycle for surgical instruments, including decontamination, inspection, assembly, packing, sterilisation, and distribution, all to a consistently high standard.
You will work with modern equipment in a busy, quality-focused environment where best practice and continuous improvement are part of daily work. This role suits someone who values precision, calm focus, and teamwork, and who wants to contribute to patient outcomes without being in the spotlight.
There is also scope for the right person to grow into a leadership pathway, helping build team capability and support future service development. This is a permanent full-time role based at Southern Cross North Harbour Hospital.
Responsibilities
- Carry out the full reprocessing workflow for reusable surgical instruments and equipment.
- Decontaminate, inspect, assemble, pack, sterilise, and distribute instruments in line with required standards.
- Maintain accuracy, efficiency, and high-quality output in a fast-moving environment.
- Operate sterilisation and reprocessing equipment safely and effectively.
- Support infection prevention practices, compliance requirements, and quality systems.
- Contribute to ongoing improvement initiatives and best-practice processes.
- Work collaboratively with theatre and sterile services colleagues to keep operations running smoothly.
- For suitable candidates, help develop team capability and support leadership activities.
Requirements
- NZ Certificate in Sterilisation Level 4, or an equivalent qualification.
- Proven background in a Sterile Services or CSSD environment.
- Previous leadership experience, or a strong interest in progressing into a leadership role.
- Good understanding of reusable medical device reprocessing across all stages.
- Working knowledge of infection control, compliance, and quality management practices.
- Confidence using sterilisation and reprocessing machinery.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to stay accurate under pressure.
- A cooperative approach and a positive, can-do mindset.
- Competence using computers, especially MS Windows.
- Familiarity with AS 5369:2023, or willingness to learn it.
What We Offer
- A competitive remuneration package, relocation support, and an employee referral bonus scheme.
- Funded health insurance, a wellbeing programme, and extended Christmas/New Year breaks.
- Flexible working arrangements.
- Partner discounts and access to an Employee Network.
