Staff Nurse - Eden Ward (open to Newly Qualified Nurses)

Role overview

Eden Ward at Wexham Park Hospital is a 17-bed inpatient unit focused on haematology, oncology, and palliative care. The ward delivers specialist treatments, including chemotherapy, for patients with a variety of conditions. This is a strong opportunity for a compassionate Band 5 nurse who wants to grow within a collaborative multidisciplinary environment.

The post holder will take responsibility for assessing individual patient needs, then planning, delivering, and reviewing care that is evidence-based, safe, and centred on the patient. Professional judgement, accountability, and a calm, respectful approach are essential throughout the role.

In addition to direct care, the nurse will help maintain high clinical standards, support fellow nursing staff, contribute to quality improvement, and take part in service development. Working closely with the Matron and Junior Sisters/Charge Nurses, the role also supports the development of the ward team and the wider service.

There may be occasions where the nurse takes on a leadership function or stands in for the Ward Sister/Matron to help keep the unit organised and operating effectively, including attending meetings where needed.

This opportunity is open to newly qualified nurses graduating in September 2026.

Main duties

• Provide safe, high-quality nursing care to patients with a broad range of acute health conditions.
• Coordinate care with the multidisciplinary team so that treatment and support are delivered in a joined-up way.
• Administer haematology and oncology treatments accurately and safely.
• Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care with minimal supervision.
• Ensure treatments are carried out in line with policy and within the multidisciplinary framework.
• Assess the complex needs of chemotherapy patients and develop, deliver, and review appropriate care plans.
• Support, guide, and monitor the nursing team to maintain standards of care.
• Work with the cancer services team to support service improvement and development.

Qualifications and experience

Applicants should hold current NMC registration or be awaiting it. Training in chemotherapy administration would be an advantage.

The role requires strong written and verbal communication, good interpersonal ability, confidence in handling difficult or stressful situations, the ability to prioritise workloads and meet deadlines, and the capability to train and supervise junior colleagues.

Experience in an acute medical nursing environment is essential, along with competence in basic life support and IV administration, and the ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams. Prior oncology experience, as well as chemotherapy administration experience or training, would be beneficial.

Working conditions

The post requires flexibility to work across other areas of the trust when needed. Shifts may include weekends and bank holidays, depending on service requirements.
