Job description

Job Overview

Join the nursing team at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust's Day Surgery Unit in Heatherwood Hospital, a modern facility focused on exemplary patient care. This role is suitable for both seasoned surgical nurses eager for a new challenge and recent graduates aiming to enhance their skills in a dynamic surgical setting. The unit offers exposure across diverse day surgery specialties including orthopaedics, general surgery, minor plastics, pain clinics, and Lithotripsy, contributing to the reduction of hospital admissions.

Operating Monday through Saturday between 07:00 and 22:00, the Day Surgery Unit supports clinical excellence through multidisciplinary collaboration and advanced Electronic Patient Record systems that enable integrated patient care.

Main Responsibilities

  • Provide tailored nursing care throughout the patient’s day surgery journey, from assessment to post-discharge evaluation.
  • Deliver compassionate, safe, and effective nursing care during admission, surgery, and discharge phases.
  • Work closely with the multidisciplinary team to ensure outstanding clinical outcomes and positive patient experiences.
  • Implement standardised care protocols to facilitate same-day discharge for most patients.
  • Conduct pre-operative and post-operative care, including patient education and discharge planning.
  • Maintain effective communication and teamwork to support the Surgical Hub’s continued achievements.
  • Ensure precise documentation using the Trust's Electronic Patient Records, complying with policies and best practices.
  • Promote continuous quality improvement and uphold excellent patient satisfaction standards as indicated by Friends and Family Test feedback.
  • Assist with training and mentoring student and newly qualified nurses to foster a supportive learning environment.
  • Contribute to audits of patient care and service delivery to maintain high standards.
  • Utilise resources efficiently and support ward managers in sustaining high team morale.

Education and Experience

  • Registered general nurse qualification is essential.
  • Preferably prior surgical experience, specifically in day surgery.
  • Additional academic qualifications and mentorship certification are advantageous.
  • Awareness of current nursing issues and national day surgery developments required.
  • Post-registration surgical or day surgery experience and knowledge of GIRFT is desirable.

Skills and Attributes

  • Strong teamwork and interpersonal communication abilities.
  • Organisational skills and effective time management.
  • Competency in IT is desirable.
