Role overview
This is a full-time shepherd general opportunity at Weka Farm in Greymouth, West Coast. It suits an experienced shepherd as well as someone with some outdoor or farming experience who is ready to begin or grow a career in agriculture. You will join a high-energy, forward-thinking team and work alongside the farm manager, who will help support your development.
About the employer
Pāmu Landcorp Farming Limited is a state-owned enterprise operating more than 110 farms throughout New Zealand. The organisation focuses on delivering innovative and sustainable farming solutions for future generations. The successful applicant will be employed by Landcorp Farming Limited, which operates under the Pāmu brand.
The farm
Weka Farm is a 1,484 effective hectare property with around 12,000 stock units. The business includes beef breeding and finishing, dairy-beef activity, and grazing for dairy heifers. The farm is about 10 minutes from Lake Brunner and around 30 minutes from Greymouth. It also has varied land types, a large area of finishing country, trade cattle and heifer grazing, and a calf-rearing operation that raises approximately 1,400 calves each year. Summer trade opportunities depend on the season.
Key responsibilities
- Support livestock and pasture management, including animal health tasks
- Carry out general farm upkeep and fencing work
- Keep records up to date and help maintain environmental compliance
What you will bring
You should be passionate about livestock, practical in your approach, and motivated to improve how work is done. The role is suited to someone who takes animal welfare seriously, works well in a team, and is comfortable being accountable for daily farm tasks.
Additional requirements
- Experience with working dogs is preferred, or willingness to develop a dog team over time
- Strong organisation, dependability, and self-motivation
- Clear communication and the ability to work collaboratively
- Confidence with record-keeping and farm technology, or a willingness to learn
- A proactive attitude toward health and safety and protecting farm assets
- A valid restricted or full driver licence
