Job description
Role overview
This is a full-time shepherd general position on Panekiri Station, one of New Zealand’s largest pastoral farms. The station is located about 40 kilometres northwest of Wairoa, next to Te Urewera National Park, and offers a varied hill-country farming environment.
What you will do
- Carry out livestock handling and general stock work.
- Support day-to-day farm upkeep, including fencing and maintenance tasks.
- Work across diverse hill-country terrain and take on a wide range of farm duties.
About the farm
Panekiri is one of Pāmu’s major farming operations. The property covers 8,982 hectares, with 5,200 hectares of effective rolling hill country, and winters around 50,000 stock units. The station also offers recreational options such as hunting, hiking, and fishing, along with a school bus at the farm gate and a strong local community.

Candidate expectations
- Have a strong interest in animal care and take livestock welfare seriously.
- Ideally bring 3 to 6 working dogs.
- Be organised, dependable, and self-driven in daily work.
- Communicate clearly and contribute positively within a team.
- Be comfortable maintaining accurate records and using farm technology, or willing to learn.
- Take a proactive approach to health and safety and the care of farm assets.
- Hold a valid restricted or full driver licence.
