Course Overview

This course offers an introduction to existential themes in philosophy, with topics varying yearly. Subjects include the search for meaning, life's purpose, faith, freedom, death, sexuality, art, and imagination. Philosophical texts may be complemented by literature, poetry, and films.

Position Details

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Toronto Mississauga invites applications for a Sessional Lecturer for the Fall 2026 term (September 1 to December 31, 2026). The appointment involves teaching a university-level credit course in-person with estimated enrollment around 100 students. The scheduled class hours are Wednesdays from 2:00 to 3:00 PM and Fridays from 1:00 to 3:00 PM.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver course content effectively.
  • Develop, administer, and grade assignments.
  • Calculate and submit final grades.
  • Maintain regular office hours for student support.

Qualifications

  • PhD completed, ideally in philosophy.
  • Experience teaching courses, preferably philosophy courses at U of T.
  • Thorough knowledge and expertise in the subject matter of existentialism.
  • Research experience and a solid record of academic achievement considered an advantage.

Compensation

  • Sessional Lecturer I: $9,997.48 (including 4% vacation pay).
  • Sessional Lecturer I - Long Term and II: $10,699.22 (including 6% vacation pay).
  • Sessional Lecturer II - Long Term and III: $10,953.96 (including 6% vacation pay).
  • Sessional Lecturer III - Long Term: $11,228.90 (including 6% vacation pay).
  • If discrepancy occurs, the collective agreement rates will prevail.

  • This posting follows the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement.
  • Completion of course grading by December 2026 is mandatory.
  • Preference is given to candidates advanced to Sessional Lecturer II or III ranks per the Agreement.
