About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Real Estate Development Accountant to take a leadership role in overseeing the financial management and budgeting aspects of affordable housing development projects. This position encompasses all stages from predevelopment through closing, construction, stabilization, and conversion. The role reports directly to the Controller of Housing and acts as a key strategic partner to enhance financial operations across the development pipeline.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage construction loan draw processes and monitor construction budgets ensuring compliance with loan requirements and agency regulations.
  • Review contracts and cost allocations critically while reconciling ledgers to maintain financial accuracy.
  • Coordinate with housing development, design and construction, asset management, and finance teams for precise reporting and timely disbursements.
  • Participate in project meetings providing financial updates, assessing risks, and supporting business decisions.
  • Prepare detailed budget-to-actual analyses, variance reports, cash flow projections, and other financial assessments.
  • Maintain project controls including job cost budgets, sources and uses of funds, and expense tracking with Yardi software.
  • Lead construction loan draw submissions, ensuring all required documentation is complete and accurate.
  • Maintain strong internal controls and ensure adherence to GAAP and other accounting standards.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to improve accounting systems and introduce process enhancements.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA designation is preferred.
  • Between 5 to 8 years of accounting experience, specifically within real estate development and affordable housing projects.
  • Proven expertise in managing construction loan draws and monitoring development budgets.
  • In-depth knowledge of LIHTC transactions and affordable housing financing structures.
  • Advanced proficiency with Yardi software including job cost, general ledger, and reporting features.
  • Strong Excel skills including pivot tables, lookups, financial modeling, and budget tracking.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

Additional Information

The position requires careful coordination with external parties such as tax advisors, accountants, lenders, syndicators, and housing agencies to meet reporting and compliance obligations. This role also supports monthly and annual audit processes related to the development pipeline and assists with tax filings for affiliated entities.
