Job description

About the team

Join Zillow’s Corporate Affairs organization, where communications, public affairs, industry relations, and employee communications come together to shape how employees and the broader world understand the company’s work and direction. In this role, you will lead the employee communications function for a globally distributed workforce of about 8,000 people, helping keep employees informed, connected, and motivated.

About the role

This position offers the chance to define how Zillow communicates internally at an important stage in its growth. You will help create the strategy, operating structure, and leadership voice that make employee communication feel clear, human, and useful rather than overly corporate. The role is ideal for someone who wants to build a function from the ground up and influence how leaders and employees connect across the company.

What you will do

  • Set the direction for Zillow’s employee communications program, including its framework, governance, and operating model, so it works consistently across a distributed workforce.
  • Work closely with senior leaders to shape messaging that is direct and credible, including drafting, coaching, advising, and challenging ideas when needed.
  • Own communications for company all-hands and other major internal moments such as business updates, organizational changes, and policy announcements, in partnership with Legal, HR, and Finance.
  • Design and expand a leadership communications program with practical tools, templates, and coaching support that helps executives communicate effectively with their teams.
  • Build channel strategy and oversight across intranet, newsletters, Slack, video, and executive cascade communications so each channel serves a defined purpose and audience.
  • Create measurement approaches that assess whether communications are truly understood and effective, not just opened or clicked.
  • Identify issues early and bring forward solutions instead of only surfacing problems.
  • Evaluate how AI can improve speed and effectiveness in the communications function and help define its use.
  • Guide and develop a small high-performing team by setting priorities, direction, and an environment where they can do excellent work.

Work arrangement

This is a remote role. Remote employees do not have a fixed corporate office and work from a physical location of their choice, which must be shared with the company. U.S.-based employees may live anywhere in the 50 states, subject to limited exceptions.

Compensation

Base pay varies by location. In California, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington state, and Washington DC, the annual base salary range is $212,100 to $338,900. In Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Minnesota, Nevada, Ohio, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Virginia, the annual base salary range is $201,500 to $321,900. The stated range may not apply outside these locations.

In addition to base salary, this position may include equity awards based on factors such as experience, performance, and location. Pay will not fall below the exempt salary threshold required by the employee’s state.

Who you are

You bring at least 12 years of communications experience, including substantial work in internal or employee communications, and 4 or more years of experience managing people leaders. You have strong writing instincts and can translate complex business decisions into messages employees will actually engage with. You have worked directly with senior leaders on sensitive or nuanced communications and earned their confidence. You are comfortable leading change communications around restructures, policy updates, and other situations that require speed, empathy, and precision. You enjoy building governance, measurement, and operating rhythms rather than simply inheriting them. You collaborate well across functions, especially with People and HR, and can move work forward while aligning stakeholders. You make sound decisions in ambiguous situations, are willing to work hands-on, and can contribute directly to the work as needed.

Education

A bachelor’s degree is required. Journalism, Communications, or a related discipline is preferred. Candidates with non-traditional backgrounds and transferable experience are encouraged to apply.

Preferred experience

It is helpful if you have used AI tools in communications workflows and can speak to how they improve the work. Familiarity with internal communication platforms such as Slack, intranet systems, video, and newsletters is also valued, along with a practical sense of when each channel is most effective. Experience in a high-growth technology company, marketplace business, or similarly fast-moving environment is a plus. A record of helping leaders communicate in a voice that feels authentic to them is also preferred.
