School Cleaner - East Lothian

Role Overview

This position involves a 42-week permanent term-time contract primarily focused on maintaining the cleanliness of school premises. Working hours are Monday to Thursday from 4pm to 9pm and Friday from 12:30pm to 5:30pm. The role includes cleaning classrooms, offices, toilets, cloakrooms, staircases, and other utilized areas within the school.

This is a term-time role with additional responsibility during summer holidays to engage in an intensive two-week deep cleaning of the school.

Key Duties

• Clean designated school areas as assigned by the supervisor.
• Use cleaning products following guidance from the cleaning supervisor.
• Operate cleaning equipment like vacuum cleaners and polishers for soft and hard flooring.
• Maintain confidentiality related to school matters.
• Perform vacuum cleaning on all floor types.
• Conduct spot cleaning of spills and wipe down surfaces including furniture, ledges, pipes, paintwork, doors, and glass.
• Empty and clean waste and recycling bins.
• Clean toilets, including all sanitary fixtures.
• Mop and spray-clean hard floor areas.
• Straighten, polish, and wipe furniture.
• Restock supplies in classrooms and toilets.
• Secure rooms by closing windows, switching off lights upon completion, and locking doors.
• Report any misuse or vandalism promptly.
• During school closures or deep cleaning periods, perform detailed cleaning such as gum removal, high-level dusting, wall washing, and moving furniture to access hard-to-reach areas.
• Undertake additional cleaning tasks as directed by supervisory staff.
• Immediately report hazards or damages to the cleaning supervisor.
• Adhere strictly to all Health & Safety guidelines in line with company policy.

Required Skills and Experience

• Possession of BICSc certification or equivalent, or willingness to achieve certification post-training.
• Proven experience in similar cleaning roles, ideally in a multi-site environment.
