Job description
About Spectrum Community Health CIC
Spectrum Community Health CIC is a not-for-profit Community Interest Company dedicated to alleviating health disparities and enhancing health outcomes for the most vulnerable populations in the community. Our organization values patient-centered care and strives for measurable impact through compassionate healthcare delivery.
Role Overview
We are currently seeking a salaried General Practitioner (GP) to join our multidisciplinary team (MDT) at HMP Forest Bank. The team includes diverse healthcare professionals such as mental health practitioners, pharmacists, and advanced nurse practitioners, collaboratively delivering primary care within the prison environment. Each clinical session includes eight face-to-face appointments, each lasting 15 minutes, with patient presentations comparable to community primary care. Our goal is to ensure 'equivalence of care' for all patients in this setting.
While previous experience in prison healthcare is advantageous, it is not mandatory as comprehensive training will be provided. Ideal candidates will be passionate about addressing health inequalities, empathetic towards patients, and thrive in MDT settings. Leadership skills and adaptability to a unique, fast-paced primary care context are essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide face-to-face clinical services including medical components of prison reception assessments, scheduled, unscheduled, and emergency care for both inpatient and segregation units.
- Conduct thorough clinical evaluations and develop differential diagnoses along with effective management plans.
- Prescribe medications and assess pharmacological treatments responsibly.
- Order, interpret, and utilize clinical investigations appropriately.
- Refer patients to specialists and secondary care when necessary and ensure proper follow-up.
- Offer information, guidance, and support to facilitate informed patient choices regarding ongoing care.
- Monitor chronic diseases per NICE guidelines and local policies.
- Administer suitable end-of-life care under supervision from palliative care experts.
- Maintain up-to-date clinical knowledge to address complex health needs of vulnerable prisoners, focusing on substance misuse and offender health in secure settings.
- Note: Psychiatric evaluation and management of serious mental illness are managed by specialist mental health providers.
Additonal Information
GPs are also expected to provide reception cover from 5 pm to 9 pm, Monday to Friday (subject to discussion).
