Overview
The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) seeks a Safety Specialist to foster a culture of safety and health across its campuses. Reporting to the Occupational Safety Program Manager, this role combines technical expertise and proactive education in occupational safety. The Specialist conducts thorough inspections of campus facilities and work environments to detect hazards and ensure compliance with safety regulations and institutional policies.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead periodic in-depth inspections of buildings, shops, and various work areas to identify potential risks and document findings.
- Collaborate with university departments to implement timely corrective measures following inspections.
- Provide specialized support in program development, training, and safety-related initiatives.
- Serve as a subject matter expert, advising the university community on safety best practices and responding to related inquiries.
- With approval, recommend necessary safety equipment acquisitions and coordinate maintenance and calibration with vendors.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety or a related discipline from an accredited institution, or equivalent experience as detailed.
- Between 2 and 4 years of experience performing safety inspections focusing on hazard identification, risk assessment, and risk mitigation across diverse workplaces.
- Credentials must be secured before employment commencement.
Equivalency Options
- In place of a bachelor’s degree, applicants may qualify with four extra years of relevant experience or with an associate degree plus two additional years of experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certifications such as CHST or OHST.
- Completion of OSHA 10-hour General Industry or Construction course.
- Familiarity with OSHA, ANSI, NFPA standards, Nevada Revised Statutes, and Nevada Administrative Code.
- Experience with specialty safety equipment like gas meters, light meters, and noise dosimeters.
- Understanding of university organizational structures, safety policies, ADA accessibility, and inspection platforms like CHIMERA.
