Job description
Role overview
In this position, you will take charge of building, applying, and continuously strengthening the unit’s safety framework. The role involves designing robust safety programmes to reduce incidents and acting as the key safety specialist for the unit.
Key duties
- Keep the unit’s safety policy, training safety regulations, standing operating procedures, and related instructions up to date, and share them regularly with all personnel.
- Ensure staff follow safety rules and policies, and flag any non-compliance so corrective action can be taken.
- Attend all activities that involve higher safety risk.
- Prepare the annual unit safety workplan and organise unit safety conferences.
- Review safety policies and standing orders on a regular basis so they remain current and relevant.
- Make sure monthly unit safety workshops are conducted, while staying current on safety rules, regulations, and standards.
Challenges in the role
- You will need to build a strong understanding of the Army’s safety framework, culture, policies, and directives that apply to both local and overseas training.
- The work may involve a relatively heavy training tempo, including one or more overseas exercises each year.
Candidate profile
- The ideal candidate has at least 5 years of experience supporting and carrying out safety audits and internal audits.
- You should be able to deliver safety training, including induction sessions, case-based learning, and hazard reporting guidance.
- Strong communication skills are important for shaping and influencing a safer work culture.
