Job description
Role overview
The Regional Manager, West serves as the primary business development and relationship management lead for FSC certification growth and retention across the assigned territory. The position is designed to expand forest management acreage, bring more primary processors into Chain of Custody certification, and keep current certificate holders engaged and supported.
Territory and work setup
This is a remote role with up to 30% travel across the region. A strong on-the-ground presence is important, along with consistent relationship building throughout the forestry and forest products ecosystem. The territory includes California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Colorado, Utah, Montana, Hawaii, Alaska, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, and Wyoming. Most active certification work and stakeholder interaction is concentrated in Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, and Montana. The region already has an established certification pipeline that can be built on for future growth.
Core responsibilities
The role centers on three main outcomes: expanding FSC-certified Forest Management acreage, increasing participation of primary processors in FSC Chain of Custody certification, and retaining existing forest management and primary processor certificate holders.
Forest management growth
- Identify, engage, and recruit potential forest management certificate holders through targeted outreach, relationship building, and opportunity creation.
- Develop productive connections with landowners, tribes, forest managers, processors, public agencies, and other stakeholders who can support certification growth.
- Track regional forestry trends, market shifts, and new opportunities that may affect certification.
- Build and actively manage a regional certification pipeline.
Retention of certificate holders
- Maintain strong working relationships with current Forest Management certificate holders.
- Reach out regularly to uncover needs, concerns, and opportunities.
- Work to remove barriers that could interrupt continued certification.
- Link certificate holders with the tools, knowledge, and relationships needed to solve problems and stay aligned with their certification goals.
- Relay feedback, issues, and opportunities to the relevant FSC US teams.
Processor recruitment and supply chain development
- Expand primary processor certification by sourcing and engaging prospective Chain of Custody certificate holders through strategic outreach and relationship management.
- Create connections between certified forests and primary processors to strengthen FSC-certified supply chains.
- Spot and help resolve supply chain constraints that slow certification growth.
- Develop relationships with industry groups, procurement professionals, and other forest products stakeholders to advance FSC certification in the region.
Strategic engagement and organizational support
- Represent FSC US at relevant industry meetings, conferences, and stakeholder events.
- Collect market intelligence and identify risks, barriers, and new opportunities tied to certification growth.
- Support the delivery of grant-funded projects.
- Help shape work plans, budgets, and execution strategies for new grant opportunities that support FSC US priorities.
- Bring regional insight to planning, strategy, and cross-functional initiatives.
- Take on additional mission-aligned duties as needed to support organizational goals.
Measures of success
Success in this role means increasing FSC-certified forest management acreage, growing primary processor participation in Chain of Custody certification, maintaining a strong opportunity pipeline, and contributing to FSC US’s target of 45 million FSC-certified acres by 2028.
Eligibility
Only U.S. residents located in Washington, Oregon, Northern California, Montana, or Idaho can be considered for this role.
Compensation
The expected annual salary is between $90,000 and $110,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
Application timing
Applications must be submitted by July 3, 2026.
Requirements
Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree in Forestry, Natural Resources, Forest Products, Environmental Science, Business, or a related discipline, along with at least eight years of relevant professional experience. A strong grasp of forestry, forest products, or natural resource management is essential, as is experience in business development, market development, or client relationship management. The role also calls for strong communication, organization, and project management skills, plus the ability to work independently in a remote setting. Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams, is required.
Preferred background
Applicants with an SAF-accredited forestry degree, FSC certification experience, established relationships in western forestry or forest products, or prior work with landowners, public agencies, tribal forestry programs, family forest owners, or primary processors will be especially well matched.
Benefits
This organization operates fully remotely. Compensation is positioned competitively against similar nonprofit employers and adjusted for local cost of living. Employees receive 100% employer-paid medical and dental coverage, with partial coverage available for dependents. Additional benefits include generous paid time off, an employer-matched 401(k), and work-from-home tools and equipment to support the home office.
