Job description

The opportunity

Auckland Council’s Pools and Leisure team is hiring Recreation Team Members for the busy Allan Brewster Leisure Centre. This frontline position is varied and hands-on, with a strong focus on community recreation, customer service, and supporting children and young people through sports and holiday programmes.

What the role involves

You will help deliver a wide mix of leisure activities, including basketball skills sessions, preschool programmes, sporting leagues, and daily scheduled centre programmes. The role also calls for a safe, welcoming environment and practical support across centre operations.

  • Provide friendly, high-quality service to visitors and customers.
  • Assist with the running of sports and recreation programmes for youth and young adults.
  • Help maintain a caring, enjoyable, and safe fitness and leisure setting.
  • Support centre management with administration and operational tasks.
  • Assist with centre activities such as sporting leagues and daily timetabled programmes.

Working pattern

This is a permanent onsite role for 40 hours per week. The centre operates seven days a week, and flexibility is essential, particularly during school holidays. Shifts may change depending on the roster and operational needs of the centre.

About you

You should bring a genuine interest in sports and recreation, along with confidence in a customer-facing role. Because the job involves working with children, you must be dependable, adaptable, and able to use your initiative to run suitable activities.

An energetic, positive team player with a professional approach will suit this role well. Previous experience with children is helpful, and a current First Aid Certificate and knowledge of health and safety practices are preferred, though training can be provided if needed.

Experience in teaching, coaching, gymnastics, basketball, netball, or umpiring would be a strong advantage. You also need to be comfortable supervising groups of children during after-school activities.

A full driver’s licence is required, as school pick-ups and drop-offs may form part of the job.

What is offered

You will join an outgoing, customer-focused team and gain access to a range of staff discounts and partner benefits. Free use of centre facilities is included, and there are opportunities to develop your skills and take on additional functions within the centres over time.

In some situations, you may also be asked to help on the front desk or with general customer service duties when the team is short-staffed or during busy periods.

Pay and application details

The pay rate is Living Wage, $28.95, with employer KiwiSaver contributions paid in addition to the base salary. Applications close on Sunday 5 July 2026 at 23:59, and applications may be reviewed before the closing date, so early submission is encouraged.

Additional information

This position is classified as a Children’s Worker role under the Vulnerable Children Act 2014 and is considered safety sensitive. Successful candidates will need to complete police vetting and a drug test before starting work.

Auckland Council is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes applications from people of all genders, ethnicities, ages, educational backgrounds, religious beliefs, and from disabled and neurodivergent applicants. The organisation is committed to an accessible recruitment process and encourages candidates to request any support or adjustments they may need.

If you need help or have access requirements during the application process, you should let the employer know when you apply.
