Job description
Role overview
HMP Bullingdon is seeking an Operational Support Grade to help keep the prison operating safely and efficiently. This is an active, varied position that supports the daily life of the establishment and includes both desk-based duties and more physical tasks.
Typical work may involve gate security and searches, checking and handling deliveries, supervising visitors, and keeping watch over phone use and CCTV. The role can also require lifting, carrying, and walking across the prison grounds to escort vehicles.
Working location and travel
This vacancy is based in Newton Morrell, England, United Kingdom. Some prison sites are in rural areas where public transport is limited, so having a driving licence and your own transport can be helpful, though it is not always mandatory unless specifically stated. Shift start and finish times are fixed, so punctual travel arrangements are essential.
Applicants must have a full, valid UK driving licence with category D1, which permits driving vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres, and a trailer of up to 750 kg.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are needed for this position. It is well suited to someone who communicates clearly, stays composed in pressure-filled situations, uses sound judgement, and works well as part of a team. The job includes a mix of weekday, weekend, and night shifts.
Career development
This is a distinctive public service role that contributes to prison safety and to the wider protection of the public. Contact with prisoners is limited, although occasional interaction may happen depending on the site. The role also builds useful knowledge of prison operations and can lead to other prison roles, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.
Training and benefits
Training and development support are provided, along with chances to progress. The package includes 25 days of annual leave on joining, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service on a pro-rata basis, plus 9 bank, public, and privilege holidays. Additional support includes access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
Pay
The stated salary is £29,432 per year.
