Job description
Role overview
His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) is hiring an Operational Support Grade for HMP Full Sutton. This is a hands-on, active role focused on helping a prison operate safely and efficiently each day.
You’ll work as part of a supportive team carrying out a wide mix of duties, including gate security and searches, handling deliveries, supervising visitors, and keeping watch through phone and CCTV monitoring. The work combines desk-based tasks with physical activity such as lifting, carrying, and walking escorts to vehicles across the prison grounds.
Work location and travel
Some prisons are in rural areas with limited public transport, so having a driving licence and access to your own transport is helpful, though it is not required unless specifically stated. Shift start and finish times are fixed, so you must be able to reach the workplace on time for every shift. Please consider the location carefully and make sure your travel arrangements suit the role.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are needed. This role may suit someone who communicates clearly, stays composed in demanding situations, and works well in a fast-moving environment. Good judgement, practical common sense, and a strong team mindset are important.
Shift pattern and working style
This position involves a variety of shifts, including weekends and nights, to support continuous prison operations.
Career growth
This is a unique opportunity to contribute to public safety and support meaningful work inside the prison service. While contact with prisoners is limited compared with prison officers, you may occasionally interact with them depending on the establishment. The role can also build valuable knowledge of prison operations and may open routes into other prison jobs, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme.
Training and development
You will receive strong training, along with opportunities to grow and progress in your career.
Pay and benefits
The advertised salary for this role is £29,432.
Additional benefits
- 25 days of annual leave when you start, increasing to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata.
- 9 days of bank, public, and privilege holidays.
- Access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service.
- Eligibility for the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
Application note
If this sounds like the right opportunity for you, you are encouraged to apply.
