Job description
Role overview
HMP Bullingdon is hiring an Operational Support Grade to help with the daily running of a busy prison. This position is varied, active, and team-focused, combining desk-based duties with practical work across the site.
What the role involves
You will contribute to prison safety and smooth operations through tasks such as gate security, searching, handling deliveries, supervising visitors, checking phone use, and monitoring CCTV. The work may also involve lifting, carrying, and walking across the prison grounds to escort vehicles.
Working pattern and travel
This role uses fixed shift start and end times, so getting to work on time is essential. The prison may be in a rural area with limited public transport, so having a driving licence and your own transport can be helpful, though it is not always mandatory unless stated. The post includes a mix of shift types, including nights and weekends.
Licence requirement
Applicants must hold a full and valid UK driving licence that includes Category D1, which permits driving vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres, and a trailer up to 750kg.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are needed. The ideal candidate is a strong communicator who stays calm under pressure, uses good judgement and common sense, and works well as part of a team.
Career development
This role can build valuable knowledge of prison operations and may open the door to other prison service roles, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion pathway.
Training and benefits
You will receive training and development opportunities. Alongside base pay, the package includes annual leave of 25 days on appointment, increasing to 30 days after 10 years of service on a pro-rata basis, plus 9 bank, public and privilege holidays. Other benefits include access to a paid Level 2 customer service apprenticeship, the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
Pay
Salary: £29,432 per year.
