Role overview

His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service is hiring an Operational Support Grade at HMP Morton Hall. This position is central to the daily smooth running of the prison and involves working as part of a team in a busy, active environment.

What the role involves

The job blends desk-based duties with practical work. Typical tasks include security checks and searches at the gate, handling deliveries, supervising visitors, and keeping an eye on phone activity and CCTV. The role can also involve moving, lifting, carrying, and walking to escort vehicles across the prison grounds.

Who this role suits

No qualifications are needed for this position. It is well suited to someone who communicates clearly, stays composed when things get busy, and uses sound judgement and common sense. Being a reliable team player is essential.

Working pattern

You will be expected to work across different shifts, including nights and weekends, to support round-the-clock operations.

This role offers a chance to build experience in the prison system and learn how prisons operate on a day-to-day basis. It may also open the door to other prison roles, including the opportunity to apply for the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme.

Pay and benefits

The salary for this role is £29,432. Alongside base pay, the package includes 25 days of annual leave at the start, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service on a pro-rata basis, plus 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays. Additional benefits include access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, a Civil Service pension, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
