Job description
Role overview
This position is for an Operational Support Grade at HMP Wayland, where you will help maintain the safe, efficient daily operation of a busy prison. The work is varied and active, combining office-style tasks with hands-on duties.
What the role involves
You may be placed at different points in the prison operation, including gate security and searches, handling deliveries, supervising visitors, and keeping an eye on phone activity and CCTV. The job also involves some physical work, such as lifting, carrying, and walking to escort vehicles across the prison site.
Working pattern and location
This role is based in Caston, England, United Kingdom. Shift timings are fixed, so punctual travel is essential. The prison may be in a rural area with limited public transport, so having a driving licence and your own transport can be helpful, although this is not a mandatory requirement unless specifically stated. The role includes a mix of shift types, including evenings, nights, and weekends.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are required. This could be a strong fit for someone who communicates clearly, stays composed in demanding situations, uses common sense and sound judgement, and works well as part of a team.
Career development
Although contact with prisoners is usually limited compared with prison officers, there may be occasional interaction depending on the establishment. The role offers valuable insight into prison operations and can open the door to other prison-based roles, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion pathway.
Training and progression
You will receive training and have access to development opportunities to support your growth within the service.
Pay and benefits
The annual salary for this position is £29,432. Alongside base pay, you will also receive 25 days of annual leave on joining, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service on a pro-rata basis. In addition, you will get 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays, access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, and entry to the Civil Service pension scheme. Other benefits mentioned include season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
Additional information
Some prison sites are located in remote areas with fewer transport options. Please consider your commute carefully before applying, as arriving and leaving on time for fixed shifts is your responsibility.
