Job description
Role overview
HMP Long Lartin is looking for an Operational Support Grade to help keep the prison running safely and efficiently. This is a practical, fast-moving role within a supportive team, covering a mix of security, front-gate checks, visitor supervision, delivery handling, phone call and CCTV monitoring, as well as some desk-based work and physical duties such as lifting, carrying, and walking escorts across the site.
Working pattern and location considerations
The position is based in a rural prison setting in Worcester, where public transport may be limited. Having a driving licence and your own transport can be helpful, although it is not mandatory unless specifically stated for the site. Shift start and finish times are fixed, so reliable travel arrangements are essential. The role also involves working a range of shifts, including nights and weekends.
About the role
As an OSG, you will contribute to the day-to-day operation of a busy prison environment. The work is varied and active, combining routine admin-style tasks with physical activity. While prisoner contact is usually limited compared with prison officers, occasional interaction may occur depending on the establishment.
What the role can lead to
This job offers a strong introduction to prison operations and can open the door to wider opportunities within the prison service, including progression routes such as the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme.
What you can expect
You will receive structured training along with opportunities for development and career progression.
Additional pay and benefits
- Base salary of £29,432.
- 25 days of annual leave on joining, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata.
- 9 days of bank, public, and privilege holidays.
- Access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service.
- Eligibility for the Civil Service pension scheme.
- Season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
Who this role suits
This opportunity is well suited to someone who communicates clearly, stays composed in stressful situations, uses good judgment, and works well as part of a team. No formal qualifications are required.
