Job description
Role Overview
His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service is hiring prison officers for HMP Highpoint. This is a challenging, fast-moving position where your work helps protect the public and supports people in custody to make positive changes in their lives.
The role suits someone with strong personal integrity, sound judgment, resilience, and the confidence to work in a demanding environment. Every day can bring different situations, so adaptability and a steady approach are essential.
Who This Role Suits
There is no single background for a successful prison officer. People from many different careers and life experiences can thrive in this role, including those with experience in parenting, teaching, retail, or the armed forces. What matters most is that you bring empathy, self-belief, and effective communication.
You will need to form professional, constructive relationships with offenders, including individuals who may be at a low point in their lives, while consistently maintaining boundaries and safety.
Strong teamwork is central to the job. You must be prepared to support colleagues, act collaboratively, and help maintain a safe environment for prisoners, staff, and visitors.
What the Job Involves
This is a varied public service role in which you may take on several different responsibilities within a single shift. You could be helping to calm a difficult situation, guiding someone through their day, or supporting learning and rehabilitation efforts.
The work is hands-on and directly involves prisoners in a secure setting, with the wider aim of keeping the public safe and contributing to rehabilitation.
Working Pattern
You will need to be available for rotating shifts and weekend working.
Training, Growth and Rewards
Full training is provided, along with opportunities to progress and develop your career. There is also scope to specialise in different areas over time.
The package includes a salary of £35,746 to £40,003, plus 25 days of annual leave each year, childcare vouchers, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
Beyond the benefits, the role offers the satisfaction of helping people get back on track, which can be a uniquely rewarding experience.
Application
Candidates who feel they match the qualities described are encouraged to apply.
