Job description

Role overview

His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service is recruiting prison officers for HMP Highpoint. This is a demanding, high-energy position where you will help protect the public while also supporting people in custody to make positive changes in their lives. The salary for the role is £35,746 to £40,003.

What the role involves

Every day in this job can look different. You may be expected to act as a calm presence, support or guide people, and step into different responsibilities across the day. The position involves close contact with prisoners in a secure setting, with the wider aim of maintaining safety and contributing to rehabilitation.

Who this role suits

This opportunity is open to people from a wide range of backgrounds. Experience from areas such as parenting, teaching, retail, or the armed forces may translate well, especially where it has built empathy, confidence, and strong communication. The employer is looking for someone with integrity, resilience, and the ability to work constructively with others.

Working style and environment

You will need to build professional, respectful relationships with offenders, including those who may be at a very low point in their lives. Teamwork is essential in this environment, and you must be committed to working closely with colleagues to help keep the prison, prisoners, and staff safe. The role requires availability for different shifts and weekend working.

Training, development and rewards

Successful candidates will receive strong training and development support, along with opportunities to progress and specialise in different areas over time. Benefits mentioned for the role include 25 days of annual leave, childcare vouchers, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme. The job also offers the personal reward of helping someone get back on track, alongside a competitive salary.
