Job description
Role overview
His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service is hiring an Operational Support Grade for HMP Morton Hall. This role is central to the safe and smooth daily running of a busy prison and involves a mix of administrative and hands-on work.
What the job involves
You’ll be part of a supportive team carrying out a wide range of tasks, including security checks and searches at the gate, handling deliveries, supervising visitors, and monitoring telephone calls and CCTV. The position is varied and active, combining desk-based responsibilities with physically demanding duties such as lifting, carrying, and walking to escort vehicles across the prison grounds.
What the role is like
This is a fast-moving environment where the ability to stay composed, communicate clearly, and use sound judgement matters. While direct contact with prisoners is more limited than for prison officers, there may be occasional interaction depending on the prison. The role also requires flexibility to work different shift patterns, including nights and weekends.
Who this could suit
No formal qualifications are required. This opportunity may suit someone who is calm under pressure, a strong team player, and keen to start a career in a secure environment where public protection and day-to-day prison operations are closely connected.
Progression and development
The position can build strong practical knowledge of prison operations and may open the door to other prison-based roles, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme. Training and development opportunities are provided to support progression.
Pay and benefits
The salary for this role is £29,432. In addition to base pay, you will receive 25 days of annual leave on appointment, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service on a pro-rata basis, plus 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays. Other benefits include access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
Additional information
The role is described as an extraordinary job carried out by someone who wants to make a meaningful contribution. Applicants are encouraged to apply if the role sounds like a good fit.
