Job description
Role overview
As an Operational Support Grade at HMP Long Lartin, you will help keep the prison operating safely and efficiently from day to day. The role sits within a busy team and covers a mix of security, front-of-house, admin-style, and hands-on duties.
What the job involves
Your work may include checking security at the gate, searching people and items, handling deliveries, overseeing visitors, and keeping an eye on phone activity and CCTV. The role is active and varied, combining desk-based tasks with physical work such as lifting, carrying, and walking to escort vehicles across the site.
Working pattern and travel
This position includes a range of shifts, including nights and weekends, so flexibility is important. Some prison sites are in remote areas with limited public transport, so having a driving licence and your own transport can be helpful, though it is not required unless specifically stated. Shift start and finish times are fixed, and you must be able to travel to work on time.
Who this role suits
You do not need formal qualifications to apply. The ideal person is a clear communicator who stays composed under pressure, uses sound judgement, shows common sense, and works well as part of a team.
Career value
This role offers a chance to contribute to public protection while supporting important work inside the prison service. Although contact with prisoners is limited compared with prison officers, you may occasionally interact with them depending on the establishment. The role can also build valuable operational experience and may open the door to other prison service opportunities, including progression routes such as the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme.
Training and progression
You will receive training and development support, along with opportunities to grow within the service.
Pay and benefits
The advertised salary is £29,432. Alongside base pay, the package includes 25 days of annual leave on joining, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata. You will also receive 9 days of bank, public, and privilege holidays, access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, and entry to the Civil Service pension scheme. Additional benefits mentioned include season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
Additional notes
This is a varied, active, full-time operational role within HM Prison and Probation Service at HMP Long Lartin.
