Job description
Role overview
The HM Prison and Probation Service is hiring an Operational Support Grade for HMP Huntercombe. This position is central to the everyday running of a busy prison and combines security, visitor management, deliveries, CCTV monitoring and other practical support duties.
What the role involves
You will work as part of a supportive team carrying out a wide range of tasks, including security checks at the gate, searches, handling deliveries, supervising visitors, and monitoring phone activity and CCTV. The job is active and varied, and may include a mix of desk-based work and physical tasks such as lifting, carrying, and walking to escort vehicles across the prison grounds.
Working arrangements
This is a shift-based role that includes weekend and night shifts. Shift start and finish times are fixed, so you must be able to travel to and from the workplace on time for every shift.
The prison is in a rural area with limited public transport options, so having a driving licence and your own transport is helpful, though not mandatory unless specifically required. Applicants should also think carefully about the location and their ability to commute reliably.
To be considered, candidates must hold a full, valid UK driving licence with D1 category entitlement, allowing operation of vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres, and a trailer up to 750 kg.
Who this role suits
This job is a good fit for someone who communicates well, stays calm under pressure, uses common sense and sound judgement, and works effectively as part of a team. No formal qualifications are needed.
Career development
The role offers a chance to build practical knowledge of how a prison operates and may open doors to other prison-based roles, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.
Pay and benefits
The advertised salary for this post is £29,432.
- 25 days of annual leave on joining, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata
- 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays
- Access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service
- Eligibility for the Civil Service pension scheme
- Season ticket loan support
- Retail discount benefits
- Employee Assistance Programme
- Cycle to Work scheme
- Training, progression and development opportunities
Additional information
This is a public protection role where your contact with prisoners is limited, although occasional interaction may happen depending on the prison setting. The work contributes directly to keeping the prison safe and running smoothly.
