Role overview
His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service is hiring an Operational Support Grade for HMP Huntercombe. This is a hands-on support role that helps the prison operate safely and efficiently each day.
What the job involves
You will work as part of a cooperative team covering a wide range of operational support duties. The role includes security checks and searches at the gate, handling deliveries, supervising visitors, and monitoring phone activity and CCTV. The work is varied and active, combining desk-based tasks with physical duties such as lifting, carrying, and walking to escort vehicles across the prison site.
Travel and attendance
Some prison sites are in rural areas where public transport can be limited, so having a driving licence and your own transport can be helpful, though it is not mandatory unless specifically stated. Shift start and finish times are fixed, so you must be able to arrive and leave work on time. Applicants should think carefully about the site location and how they will travel.
Applicants must hold a full, valid UK driving licence that includes category D1, which allows driving vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres, and a trailer weighing up to 750 kg.

Pay and benefits
The base salary for this role is £29,432. Alongside pay, you will receive annual leave of 25 days when you start, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service on a pro-rata basis, plus 9 bank, public and privilege holidays. Additional support includes access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, a Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
