Prison Support - HMP Huntercombe

Role overview

His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service is hiring an Operational Support Grade at HMP Huntercombe. This is a busy, hands-on position that helps keep the prison operating safely and efficiently on a day-to-day basis.

The work is varied and can include security checks and searches at the gate, handling incoming deliveries, overseeing visitors, and keeping an eye on phone activity and CCTV. The role blends desk-based tasks with physical activity such as lifting, carrying, and walking across the prison site to escort vehicles.

Travel and location considerations

Some prisons are in rural areas where public transport can be limited, so having a driving licence and your own transport can be helpful, though it is not always essential unless specifically stated. Shift start and end times are fixed, so you must be able to reach the workplace on time for every shift. You should think carefully about the location and your travel arrangements before applying.

Driving licence requirement

Applicants must hold a full, valid UK driving licence that includes category D1. This allows the holder to drive vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres, and a trailer of up to 750kg.

Pay and benefits

The salary for this role is £29,432. In addition to base pay, the package includes 25 days of annual leave at the start of employment, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service on a pro-rata basis, plus 9 days of bank, public, and privilege holidays. You will also have access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
