Job description
Role overview
His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service is hiring an Operational Support Grade at HMP Guys Marsh in East Stour, England. This is a hands-on support role that helps keep the prison operating efficiently and safely on a daily basis.
What the role involves
You will work with a team to handle a wide mix of duties across the establishment. Typical work includes gate security and searches, managing deliveries, supervising visitors, and observing phone use and CCTV. The post combines desk-based tasks with active work such as lifting, carrying, and walking escorts across the prison site.
Shift pattern and working style
This position follows a range of shifts, including nights and weekends, so flexibility is essential. The role is fast-moving and suited to someone who stays composed, uses good judgement, and works well with others.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are required. The employer is looking for a strong communicator who remains calm under pressure, applies common sense, and contributes positively as part of a team.
Career value
The post offers a chance to build experience in prison operations and understand how the system works from the inside. It may also lead to future opportunities within the prison service, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.
Pay and benefits
The advertised salary is £29,432. Alongside base pay, you will receive training and development support, plus a benefits package that includes annual leave of 25 days on joining, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service on a pro-rata basis. You will also receive 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays.
Additional support and rewards include access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
Additional information
This is a unique public service role focused on protecting the public and supporting meaningful work inside prisons. Direct contact with prisoners is limited compared with prison officer roles, although some interaction may occur depending on the prison.
