Job description
Role overview
HMP Huntercombe is hiring an Operational Support Grade to help keep the prison operating safely and efficiently. This is an active, varied role that combines desk-based duties with hands-on tasks across the establishment.
What the role involves
You will support the daily running of a busy prison environment by assisting with security checks, gate searches, deliveries, visitor supervision, and monitoring phone activity and CCTV. The work can also involve physical activity such as lifting, carrying, and walking across the prison grounds to escort vehicles.
Working arrangements
This position follows fixed shift start and finish times, so punctual travel to and from work is essential. The role includes a range of shifts, including evenings, weekends, and nights, to help maintain continuous operations.
Location and travel
Some prison sites are in rural areas with limited public transport, so having a driving licence and access to your own transport can be helpful, though it is not always a mandatory requirement unless specifically stated. Applicants should carefully assess whether they can reliably commute to the site on time for every shift.
Driving licence requirement
Applicants must hold a full, valid UK driving licence that includes category D1. This category permits driving vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres, and a trailer weighing up to 750kg.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are needed. The role is well suited to someone who communicates clearly, stays composed under pressure, uses good judgement, and works well as part of a team in a fast-moving setting.
Career development and support
This role offers a chance to build practical knowledge of prison operations and may open doors to future progression within the prison service, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route. Training and development support are provided to help you grow in the role.
Pay and benefits
The salary for this position is £29,432. Alongside base pay, the role includes 25 days of annual leave on appointment, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service on a pro-rata basis, plus 9 days of bank, public, and privilege holidays. You will also have access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, a Civil Service pension, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
