Job description

Role overview

This position is for an Operational Support Grade at HMP Huntercombe within His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service. The role is centred on helping a busy prison operate safely and efficiently as part of a supportive team.

What the job involves

The work is varied and active, mixing desk-based duties with practical tasks. You may handle gate security checks and searches, process deliveries, oversee visitors, and monitor phone calls and CCTV. The role can also involve lifting, carrying, and walking across the prison estate to escort vehicles.

Working pattern and travel

This is a shift-based role, including weekends and night duties. Shift start and finish times are fixed, so punctual travel to and from the site is essential. The prison is in a rural location, so having a driving licence and your own transport can be helpful, although it is not mandatory unless specifically stated otherwise.

Driving licence requirement

Applicants must hold a full, valid UK driving licence that includes category D1. This category permits driving vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres, and a trailer of up to 750kg.

Who this role suits

No formal qualifications are needed. The ideal candidate will communicate well, remain calm when under pressure, use good judgement, show common sense, and work effectively as part of a team. The role is fast-paced and may suit someone looking to build a career in a prison environment.

Career development

This job offers experience of prison operations and can open the door to other roles within the prison service, including the opportunity to apply for the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme.

Pay and benefits

The salary for this position is £29,432. In addition to base pay, you will receive 25 days of annual leave on appointment, increasing to 30 days after 10 years of service on a pro-rata basis, along with 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays. You will also have access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.

Training and progression

You will receive training plus opportunities for development and progression.
