Job description

Role overview

This role is for an Operational Support Grade at HMP Huntercombe within His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS). It is a varied, active position that helps keep a busy prison operating safely and efficiently.

What the job involves

You will support the daily running of the prison by carrying out a mix of security, visitor, delivery, and monitoring tasks. The work can involve both desk-based duties and physically active tasks such as lifting, carrying, and walking to escort vehicles across the prison grounds.

Key duties

  • Carry out gate security and search checks.
  • Handle and monitor deliveries entering the site.
  • Supervise visitors while on prison premises.
  • Monitor telephone calls and CCTV.
  • Support the smooth and safe running of the prison alongside the wider team.
  • Work fixed shift times and ensure punctual attendance at the start of each shift.

Travel and location considerations

Some prison sites are located in rural areas with limited public transport, so having a driving licence and your own transport can be helpful, although it is not mandatory unless specifically stated. Because shift start and end times are fixed, you must be able to travel to and from work reliably and on time.

Driving licence requirement

Applicants must hold a full, valid UK driving licence that includes category D1, allowing the holder to drive vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres, and a trailer of up to 750kg.

Who this role suits

No formal qualifications are needed. This role may suit someone who communicates clearly, stays calm under pressure, uses sound judgement, and works well as part of a team. The role is fast-paced and may suit someone looking to build a career in the prison service.

Working pattern

You will be expected to work a range of shifts, including nights and weekends.

Career development

This job offers experience of how a prison operates and may create opportunities to progress into other prison service roles, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.

Training and progression

You will receive training and opportunities for development and progression.

Pay

The role offers a salary of £29,432.

Additional benefits

  • 25 days of annual leave when you start, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata.
  • 9 days of bank, public, and privilege holidays.
  • Access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service.
  • Access to the Civil Service pension scheme.
  • Season ticket loans.
  • Retail discounts.
  • Employee Assistance Programme.
  • Cycle to Work scheme.

Application note

If the role matches your background and interests, you are encouraged to apply.
