Job description

Role overview

This position is for an Operational Support Grade at HMP Huntercombe, part of His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service. The role is varied and hands-on, supporting the everyday operation of a busy prison environment.

What the job involves

You will work as part of a supportive team handling a range of operational tasks. These include security checks and searches at the gate, processing deliveries, supervising visitors, and monitoring phone activity and CCTV. The work combines desk-based duties with physical activity such as lifting, carrying, and walking to escort vehicles across the prison site.

Travel and location considerations

Some prison sites are in rural areas with limited public transport, so having a driving licence and your own transport may be helpful, although it is not always required unless specifically stated. Shift start and end times are fixed, so you must be able to arrive and leave on time for every shift.

Driving licence requirement

Applicants must hold a full, valid UK driving licence that includes category D1. This category permits driving vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres, and a trailer weighing up to 750kg.

Who this role suits

No formal qualifications are needed for this job. It may suit someone who communicates well, stays calm under pressure, uses sound judgement, and works effectively as part of a team. The position is fast-paced and can be a strong starting point for a career in the prison service.

Working pattern

You will be expected to work a range of shifts, including nights and weekends, to help keep the establishment operating smoothly.

Career development

This role offers a chance to build valuable knowledge about how a prison operates and may create opportunities to move into other prison jobs, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.

Training and progression

You will receive good training along with opportunities for development and progression.

Pay and benefits

The salary for this role is £29,432. In addition to base pay, you will receive annual leave starting at 25 days on appointment and increasing to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated on a pro-rata basis. You will also get 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays, access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, and access to the Civil Service pension scheme. Further benefits include season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.

Additional note

This is an opportunity to support the public and contribute to important work that helps keep prisons safe and functioning effectively.
