Job description

Role overview

At HMP Huntercombe, the Operational Support Grade (OSG) helps keep the prison operating safely and efficiently on a daily basis. This is an active, varied position within a supportive team, combining desk-based work with hands-on duties such as security checks at the gate, handling deliveries, overseeing visitors, and monitoring phone activity and CCTV. The role may also involve lifting, carrying, and walking across the prison grounds to escort vehicles.

Work location and transport

This establishment is in a rural area, so public transport may be limited. Having a driving licence and your own transport can be helpful, although it is not mandatory unless specifically stated. Shift start and end times are fixed, so you must be able to arrive and leave on time. Please consider the location carefully when assessing your travel arrangements.

Driving licence requirement

Applicants must hold a full, valid UK driving licence that includes category D1, which permits driving vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres, and a trailer up to 750kg.

Who this role suits

No formal qualifications are needed. This job may suit someone who communicates well, stays composed in demanding situations, and enjoys working in a fast-moving environment. Good judgement, practical common sense, and a strong team mindset are essential.

Shift pattern and nature of the role

The OSG position includes a mix of shift types, including weekends and nights. Contact with prisoners is limited compared with prison officers, although occasional interaction may occur depending on the establishment.

Career development

This role offers a strong foundation for understanding how a prison operates and may open doors to other prison careers, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme. Training and development opportunities are provided to support progression.

Pay and benefits

The salary for this position is £29,432. Alongside base pay, you will receive 25 days of annual leave on appointment, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated on a pro-rata basis. You will also receive 9 bank, public and privilege holidays, access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, and a Civil Service pension scheme. Additional benefits include season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
