Job description
Role overview
This position is for an Operational Support Grade at HMP Full Sutton within His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service. The job is varied, active, and central to the smooth daily operation of the prison. It combines desk-based duties with practical work such as moving around the site, lifting and carrying, and escorting vehicles across prison grounds.
What the role involves
You will support a wide range of operational tasks, including security checks and searches at the gate, handling deliveries, supervising visitors, and monitoring phone activity and CCTV. The role contributes to keeping the prison safe, organised, and running efficiently.
Working arrangements
This is a shift-based role with fixed start and finish times, so punctual travel to and from the prison is essential. The post includes a variety of shifts, including weekends and nights. Because some prisons are in rural areas with limited public transport, having a driving licence and your own transport is helpful, though it is not a mandatory requirement unless specifically stated.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are required. The role is well suited to someone who communicates clearly, stays calm in pressured situations, uses common sense and sound judgement, and works well as part of a team.
Career development
This role offers a chance to build real experience in a prison environment, contribute to public protection, and explore longer-term progression within the prison service. It may also create a pathway into other prison roles, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme.
Pay and benefits
The salary for this role is £29,432. Alongside base pay, you will receive training and development opportunities, plus benefits such as annual leave, bank and public holidays, apprenticeship access, pension support, and other staff schemes.
Additional information
- Annual leave starts at 25 days on appointment and increases to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated on a pro-rata basis.
- You will also receive 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays.
- There is access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service.
- Additional benefits include the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
