Job description

Role overview

His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service is recruiting prison officers for HMP Swaleside. This is a demanding, people-focused role where you help protect the public while supporting individuals in custody to make positive changes in their lives.

The position offers a salary of £37,246 to £41,503 and suits someone with integrity, resilience, and the confidence to work in a fast-moving environment where every day brings different challenges.

Who this role suits

There is no standard background for a prison officer. People from very different professions and life experiences can do well in this job, including those who have worked in education, retail, parenting, or the armed forces. What matters most is empathy, self-belief, strong communication, and the ability to build respectful, professional relationships with offenders.

You should also be comfortable working closely with a team and contributing to a safe, secure environment for colleagues, prisoners, and the wider public.

What the role involves

Each day can involve a mix of responsibilities, from maintaining order and safety to guiding, supporting, and engaging with prisoners. At times you may be acting as a calm presence in difficult situations, while at other times you may be coaching, advising, or helping someone learn and progress.

The work is varied, energetic, and centred on making a real difference through direct interaction with prisoners in a secure setting.

Working pattern

This role requires availability for varied shift patterns, including weekends.

Training, progression and rewards

You will receive structured training and have access to development opportunities, including the possibility of moving into specialist areas over time.

Benefits include 25 days of annual leave, childcare vouchers, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.

Beyond the tangible benefits, the role offers the personal reward of helping someone get back on track and contributing to public safety in a meaningful way.

How to express interest

If this sounds like the right fit for your skills and character, you can submit an application.

Leave it if you'd like a reply — we won't use it for anything else.
