Job description

Role overview

His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service is hiring Prison Officers for HMP Highpoint. This role offers a salary between £35,746 and £40,003 and gives you the chance to play a key part in public protection while supporting people in custody to make positive changes in their lives.

This is a high-energy position where each day can bring new situations and responsibilities. As your experience grows, you may also have opportunities to progress and specialise in different areas.

Who this role suits

The service does not look for a single type of person. Successful officers may come from a wide range of backgrounds, including parenting, teaching, retail, or the armed forces. What matters most is that you bring empathy, confidence, strong communication, integrity, and the ability to remain steady in challenging situations.

You will need to be comfortable building constructive, respectful, and professional relationships with prisoners, including individuals who may be at a very difficult point in their lives.

Because this environment depends heavily on collaboration, you must be fully prepared to work closely with colleagues and contribute to the safety of the prison, the people in custody, and the wider workforce.

Working pattern

You must be available for different shifts, including weekends.

What the role involves

In this varied career, you may move between several responsibilities within the same day. At different times, you could be acting as a stabilising presence, offering guidance, or helping others learn and develop. You will work directly with prisoners in a secure setting, supporting rehabilitation while helping keep the public safe.

Training and progression

Full training is provided, along with opportunities to develop your career and move into specialist areas over time.

Rewards and benefits

Alongside the salary, the role includes 25 days of annual leave each year, childcare vouchers, a season ticket loan, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and access to a Cycle to Work scheme.

Beyond the tangible benefits, this job also offers the satisfaction of helping someone rebuild their life, which can be a unique and meaningful professional experience.

Application note

If your skills and personal qualities match what is needed, you are encouraged to apply.
