Job description
Role overview
His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service is hiring prison officers for HMP Highpoint. This is a demanding, varied role focused on maintaining safety, supporting rehabilitation, and making a real difference to people’s lives.
The salary range for this position is £35,746 to £40,003.
What the role involves
Prison officers are responsible for protecting the public while working directly with prisoners in a high-pressure environment. Each day can look very different, and the job may involve acting as a peacekeeper, mentor, or educator depending on the situation.
As you build experience, there are opportunities to progress and develop into specialist areas.
Who this role suits
There is no single background for a prison officer. People from many different professions can succeed in the role, including parents, teachers, retail workers, and members of the armed forces. The key qualities are empathy, confidence, strong communication, integrity, and resilience.
You should also be able to build professional, constructive relationships with offenders, including those who may be at a very difficult stage in their lives.
Because the work relies heavily on collaboration, you must be committed to teamwork and to helping keep colleagues, prisoners, and the wider prison environment safe.
Working pattern
The role requires shift work, including weekends.
Training and development
HMPPS offers structured training, development opportunities, and the chance to specialise in different areas as your career progresses.
Benefits
Alongside a competitive salary, the role includes 25 days of annual leave, childcare vouchers, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and access to the Cycle to Work scheme.
The job also offers the satisfaction of helping offenders move toward a more stable and positive future.
How to proceed
Candidates whose strengths match the role are encouraged to submit an application.
