Job description

Overview

His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service is recruiting prison officers for HMP Wayland. This is a demanding, high-energy public service role focused on protecting the public while helping people in custody move toward positive change. Each day brings new situations, and the position offers a varied career path with room to develop over time.

Who this role suits

This role is open to people from many different backgrounds. Experience from areas such as parenting, teaching, retail, or the armed forces can translate well, especially where it has built empathy, confidence, and strong communication skills. The service looks for people with integrity, resilience, and the ability to remain professional in challenging circumstances.

About the work

Prison officers build constructive, respectful relationships with offenders, including people who may be at a very difficult point in their lives. The job requires a calm, team-focused approach, with a strong understanding that safety depends on colleagues working together consistently and professionally.

The position involves working across a variety of shifts, including weekends.

What the role involves

In this setting, one shift may include multiple responsibilities. You could be helping to maintain order, offering guidance and support, or contributing to learning and rehabilitation activity. The work is directly with prisoners in a secure environment and carries real responsibility for public safety.

Training and progression

Successful candidates will receive solid training and opportunities to progress. There is also scope to specialise in different areas as experience grows.

Pay and benefits

The salary for this role is £33,746 to £38,003. Additional benefits include 25 days of annual leave, childcare vouchers, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.

Additional information

This is a role where the personal reward can be as significant as the practical benefits. Helping someone make progress and return to a better path can bring a strong sense of achievement that is difficult to find elsewhere.

Applicants who feel they have the right qualities are encouraged to submit an application.
