Job description
Role overview
His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service is hiring prison officers for HMP Bullingdon. This is a demanding, fast-moving position where you’ll play an important part in protecting the public while supporting people in custody to make positive changes in their lives.
The salary for this role is £37,246 to £41,503.
What the role involves
No two days in this job are the same. As you build experience, you may take on a wider mix of responsibilities and develop in different directions. On any given day, you could be acting as a calm presence, offering guidance, or supporting learning and rehabilitation activity.
You will work directly with prisoners in a secure environment and help maintain safety for offenders, colleagues, and the wider prison population.
Who this role suits
There is no single background that defines a good prison officer. The service welcomes people from a range of professions and life experiences, including parenting, teaching, retail, and the armed forces. The key qualities sought are empathy, confidence, strong communication, integrity, and the ability to remain steady under pressure.
You’ll need to be comfortable building respectful, constructive, and professional working relationships with offenders, including people who may be at a very low point in their lives.
Because the job depends heavily on coordinated working, you must be fully committed to teamwork and to acting together with colleagues to keep everyone safe.
Working pattern
This position requires various shifts and weekend working.
Training and progression
Full training is provided, along with opportunities to progress and develop. There may also be scope to specialise in different areas as your career advances.
Rewards and benefits
In addition to the salary, the role includes 25 days of annual leave, childcare vouchers, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
The job also offers a strong sense of purpose and the satisfaction of helping someone get their life back on track.
How to apply
Applicants who feel they match the qualities needed for the role are encouraged to submit an application.
