Job description
Role overview
HM Prison and Probation Service is recruiting prison officers for HMP Full Sutton. This is a demanding, fast-moving position where you can help protect the public while supporting people in custody to make constructive changes in their lives.
The salary range for the role is £33,746 to £38,003.
What the role involves
Prison officers work in a setting where no two days are the same. As you build experience, you may be able to move into different areas and develop your career further.
In this role, you will work closely with prisoners and contribute to the safety and stability of the prison environment. The work can involve taking on different responsibilities during a single day, such as maintaining order, offering support, and helping people progress positively.
Who this role suits
There is no single background for a prison officer. People from many walks of life may be a good fit, including those who have worked as parents, teachers, retail staff, or in the armed forces. The key qualities sought are integrity, resilience, empathy, self-confidence, and strong communication skills.
You should be able to form professional, constructive relationships with offenders, including people who may be at a very low point in their lives. A strong team mindset is essential, as the role depends on colleagues working together to keep the prison, offenders, and staff safe.
Working pattern
This position requires shift work, including weekends.
Training, development and rewards
You will receive training and support for progression, along with opportunities to specialise in different areas over time.
The benefits package includes 25 days of annual leave, childcare vouchers, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
Beyond the practical benefits, the role offers the satisfaction of helping someone move forward and rebuild their life, which many people find uniquely rewarding.
Application note
If your qualities match what is being sought, you are encouraged to apply.
