Job description

Role overview

His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service is recruiting prison officers for HMP Full Sutton. This is a demanding but rewarding public service role focused on protecting the public, supporting rehabilitation, and contributing to safer communities.

Successful candidates will need the right mix of integrity, resilience, sound judgement, and strong interpersonal skills. The work is varied and fast-moving, with no two shifts looking the same. As you build experience, there will be chances to broaden your responsibilities and progress within the service.

Who this role suits

This post is open to people from a wide range of backgrounds. You may have worked in education, retail, the armed forces, or another people-facing environment. What matters is that you can bring empathy, confidence, clear communication, and the ability to stay professional under pressure.

You’ll be expected to form constructive working relationships with people in custody, even when they are at a very difficult point in their lives, while remaining firm, fair, and respectful.

Strong teamwork is essential. You must be ready to support colleagues and work cohesively to help keep the prison, prisoners, and staff safe.

What the job involves

This is a unique frontline role where your day may shift between several responsibilities. At different times, you may need to act as a stabilising presence, offer guidance, or support learning and behaviour change. The focus is on direct work with prisoners in a secure environment that plays an important part in public protection.

Working pattern

You will need to work a rotating pattern that includes different shifts and weekends.

Training, growth, and benefits

The role comes with structured training plus opportunities to develop and move into specialist areas over time.

Benefits include 25 days of annual leave, childcare vouchers, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and access to the Cycle to Work scheme.

The job also offers a competitive salary and the personal satisfaction of helping someone make progress and rebuild their life, which is a reward that goes beyond pay.
