Job description

Overview

Queensland Government is seeking a motivated Principal Trade and Investment Officer to help promote the state’s life sciences sector and attract new investment. This role focuses on building trade opportunities and strengthening Queensland’s standing as a global biomedical innovation location.

The opportunity

You will be part of a role that suits someone who enjoys meaningful, innovative work and collaborating with a wide range of stakeholders across the life sciences ecosystem. The position calls for strong familiarity with Queensland’s biomedical and clinical trials environment, including the main organisations, precincts and international partnerships across the Asia-Pacific region. Using your commercial judgement, you will identify and advance opportunities that bring investment into Queensland and support the export of clinical trial, vaccine and broader life sciences capabilities, contributing to economic growth, employment and the state’s reputation as a leading innovation hub.

About the team

The Health, Innovation and Technology (HIT) unit is part of Queensland Operations at Trade and Investment Queensland (TIQ). It supports the Queensland Trade and Investment Strategy 2022–2032 by positioning Queensland as a knowledge-based economy and by driving export growth and investment attraction in priority areas such as biomedical, healthtech, critical and digital technologies, and the sports economy.

Role overview

In this position, you will lead trade promotion and investment attraction activities across Queensland’s life sciences sector, with particular emphasis on biomedical research, clinical trials and vaccines. You will provide strategic direction, market intelligence and trusted advice to progress sector priorities, help Queensland businesses expand internationally, and attract investment from outside the state. The role also involves guiding major initiatives, maintaining relationships with stakeholders in government and industry, and supporting the development of one team member to ensure aligned delivery.

Benefits

This is an opportunity to contribute to Queensland’s international profile in life sciences while working with a collaborative, high-performing team. You will have exposure to industry leaders, researchers and overseas partners, take part in prominent initiatives and events, and help deliver outcomes that support jobs, sector expansion and broader economic benefit.

Skills and experience

The successful candidate will have strong knowledge of the life sciences landscape, solid commercial thinking and a track record of delivering trade and investment results. You should be an assured communicator who can influence senior stakeholders, prepare high-quality advice and turn market insights into practical strategy. Experience leading projects, balancing multiple priorities and developing strong partnerships across government, industry and research is important.

How to apply

Applicants should submit their application online and include a current resume plus the names and contact details of two referees who know your work well, including one current or most recent supervisor. A cover letter of no more than two pages is also required; it should explain your interest in the role, your relevant experience, why you are a strong match and how you meet the key capabilities. Do not simply repeat your resume.
