Job description

Role overview

HMP Guys Marsh is looking for an Operational Support Grade to help keep daily prison operations safe, organised, and efficient. This is a practical, varied role within a supportive team, combining desk-based duties with hands-on work across the prison estate.

The position involves tasks such as carrying out security checks and searches at the gate, handling deliveries, supervising visitors, monitoring phone calls and CCTV, and moving across the prison grounds to escort vehicles when required.

What the role involves

You will contribute to the smooth running of a busy prison by supporting a wide range of operational activities. The work is active and fast-moving, and can include lifting, carrying, walking, and other physical tasks alongside administrative and monitoring responsibilities.

Although OSG contact with prisoners is limited compared with prison officers, some interaction may still occur depending on the establishment.

What we are looking for

No formal qualifications are needed for this post. The right person will communicate well, stay composed under pressure, use sound judgement, apply common sense, and work effectively as part of a team.

This role may suit someone who wants to begin a career in the prison service and develop knowledge of how prisons operate day to day.

Working pattern and career development

You will be expected to work a range of shifts, including nights and weekends, to support continuous operations.

The role offers training, development, and progression opportunities, including the possibility of moving into other prison roles and applying for the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.

Pay and benefits

The salary for this position is £29,432.

Alongside base pay, the package includes 25 days of annual leave on joining, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata. You will also receive 9 bank, public, and privilege holidays.

Additional support includes access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.

Leave it if you'd like a reply — we won't use it for anything else.
