Role overview
HMP Guys Marsh is hiring an Operational Support Grade to help keep the prison operating smoothly and safely. This role is part of a team that supports the everyday running of a busy prison environment.
The position is active and varied, combining desk-based tasks with practical duties such as lifting, carrying, and walking across the prison grounds to escort vehicles.
What the role involves
- Supporting gate security and carrying out searches.
- Handling incoming deliveries.
- Supervising visitors.
- Monitoring phone calls and CCTV.
- Assisting with day-to-day operational work across the site.

No formal qualifications are needed. The ideal candidate communicates clearly, stays composed under pressure, uses sound judgement, and works well as part of a team.
The job involves a shift pattern that includes weekends and night shifts.
About the opportunity
This is a distinctive public service role that helps protect the public and supports important work taking place inside prisons. While contact with prisoners is limited compared with prison officers, some interaction may occur depending on the establishment.
The role also offers a strong foundation for learning how prisons operate and may open the door to other prison careers, including the chance to apply for the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme.

Pay and benefits
The salary for this role is £29,432.
Additional benefits include annual leave starting at 25 days on appointment and rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata; 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays; access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service; a Civil Service pension scheme; season ticket loans; retail discounts; an Employee Assistance Programme; and a Cycle to Work scheme.
